Rook, Paper, Scissors! Play

King of the Hill chess

Not the two-player variant where you walk your king to the centre: this one is a brawl for three or four armies. Pieces that fall come back three bells later, so the hill never goes quiet.

How it plays

  1. Hold the hill. Most pieces on the four glowing squares scores after every bell.
  2. Orders on the bell. Tap a piece, then a square: it moves on the bell.
  3. Win. First to 15 points. A king counts two, but losing it costs three.

The details

Four corners
Every army starts in a corner: a king, two knights, a bishop and two rooks. A bell rings every 3 seconds; orders land in fair turns.
Two for one square
Orders land one at a time in an order the dice shuffle, never by who tapped first. The first to land moves in; the next one takes it there if it can, or stays put.
Scoring
One point a bell, two if nobody else is up there. Level at the top, nobody scores. Points only ever stack.
Back up
A piece taken comes back to its corner three bells later, a king too. After 90 bells the most points wins.
